Below are some questions you might have about working with a wiki. If you see something on a page and want to emulate it, simply edit that page to see the source code and copy it over to your own! Immitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

As a side note, many of the functions I explain here are available more easily in the WYSIWYG editing mode. The WikiText markup is viewable by clicking the "source" button in the upper right under "Controls". Feel free to use whichever editing mode suits you, but note that examples in particular are a bit easier to produce when working in source mode.

If you have more questions, please see the Wikipedia Help page on wikitext markup

How can I bold or italicize text?Edit

Text formatting is pretty easy. To bold something, simply place three apostrophes before and after it.

'''bold text'''

The code above will produce:
bold text
Similarly, for italics, use two apostrophes.

''italic text''

The code above will produce:
italic text

How can I add bullets or numbered lists?Edit

Bullet points and numbered lists are fun. To place a bullet before something, use an asterisk.

*First
*Second
*Third

The code above produces:

  • First
  • Second
  • Third

For numbered lists use the number symbol.

#First
#Second
#Third

The code above produces:

  1. First
  2. Second
  3. Third

How can I add sections and subsections?Edit

A section is indicated by two equals signs. A subsection is indicated by three equals signs.

==Phonology==
===Tone===
===Syllable Structure===

How can I add an example?Edit

Examples in Wikitext are formatted in much the same way as you would format an example in Microsoft Word. An invisible table is created with each cell corresponding to a morpheme or its gloss. Below is an example of the code needed.

{| class="wikitable"
| mə
| jɯn
| mʙɯ
|-
| I
| see
| dog
|}
'I saw a dog.'

This code will produce the following:

jɯn mʙɯ
I see dog

'I saw a dog.'

The first thing to notice is how we begin the table.

{| class="wikitable"

This begins the table environment. Within the environment, a vertical break |, will begin a new cell. To put content in the cell, simple put a space between the vertical break and the content.

| content

If you want to start a new row, follow the vertical break immediately with a minus -.

|-

To close the table environment, follow the vertical break immediately with a close curly brace }.

|}

How can I add a link?Edit

Adding a link is simple. Any address is converted into a clickable link automatically. If you want to get fancy you can name you links like so:

[http://24.60.248.120:81/viewword.php?wordID=133 ELDER]

The above code will generate the following: ELDER

To create links to pages on this wiki (even pages that don't yet exist!) simple place a word in double square brackets.

[[Medumba Songs]]

The above code will provide a link to the page on Medumba Songs, if no page exists you will be prompted to create it upon clicking the link. Links without created pages will appear in red text.

How can I summarize relevant vocabulary items on my page?Edit

For some pages with many grammatical markers or where it is important to reference a particular word you may want to provide a brief index for readers. I have used infoboxes for this. Infoboxes are simple to make.

{{Infobox
|Box title = Relevant Medumba Vocabulary
|Row 1 title = [http://24.60.248.120:81/viewword.php?wordID=169 gi]
|Row 1 info = Question Particle
|Row 2 title = [http://24.60.248.120:81/viewword.php?wordID=167 kəʔ]
|Row 2 info = Negation Particle
|Row 3 title =  a
|Row 3 info = 'Yes'
|Row 4 title = ŋga
|Row 4 info = 'No'
}}

This example can be seen on the Yes/No questions page. The general syntax is outlined below.

{{Infobox

This begins the infobox

|Row 1 title =
|Row 1 info =
|Row 2 title =
|Row 2 info =
|Row 3 title =
|Row 3 info =
|Row 4 title =
|Row 4 info =
...
|Row n title =
|Row n info=

This provides the number of rows, their titles and their description. In the example above I have placed the vocabulary item in the "title" field. The item is linked into ELDER when possible. The info field is used for a gloss.

}}

Double curly braces close the infobox environment.
